Match Report: Amesbury Town 2 - 4 Alton

Posted: 17.10.21

Alton Win Away At Amesbury.

The Brewers bounce back to win 4-2 and move up two places in the league table.

After conceding an early goal, Alton showed quality that proved too much for the Wiltshire side. Matt Benham and George Bowerman putting in impressive performances along with a good team effort made it a deserved victory for the visitors.

Even before the first goal, Greene was called upon to make an excellent save, then on 5 mins the Amesbury 9 found himself in lots of space straight through the middle of the Alton defence to hit shot low and hard. 1-0.

A scruffy 25 mins of football from both sides continued before a lovely bit of football. Bowerman setting a perfectly weighted pass onto a well-timed run from Benham and a composed finished by Benham to make it 1-1.

This equaliser sparked some good attacking options for Alton. Jack Fowler on the right side and Liam Knight on the left, but it was George Bowerman that became the focal point of every good forward play, holding the ball up with great strength to bring in other Alton players.

It was Bowerman’s hold up play, then out wide to Jack Fowler who calmly pulled the ball back for Oli Graham to finish left foot from the edge of the area.

HT 1-2

At the restart Alton’s Frank Perkins said “it would be very important who scored next and that another goal for Alton would seal the result!” So, it was pleasing when on 53 mins a long ball from Ed Dryden up to Bowerman, then for Fowler to run onto and strike the ball hard across the goal and now at 1-3 Alton looked in control.

Alton continued to create more good chances, but then some poor defending and a volley from the Amesbury 9 bounced and seemed to take Alton by surprise.

A soft goal to give away now made it interesting at 2-3.

Oli Page came on for Fowler, and a few minutes later Andy Coulson for Knight.

The substitutes had a positive impact, Page controlling the ball well on his chest and a driving run to hit a cross that Bowerman was able to get a shot away and into the net, putting the Brewers back on course for a welcome away win.

2-4.

Noted - that some team sheets now refer to subs as "impact players", and this was certainly true of Andy Coulson who was very direct since he came on and had three shots, two on target. Richie Hunter came on for Steven Black but the game looked won by that stage.

Nice win and a refresh of the league table moves Alton up to 8th.

Well done, good work all.
