Match Report: Alton 1 - 0 Blackfield & Langley

Posted: 29.09.21

Another valuable 3 points gained for Alton in torrential rain at the Enclosure on Tuesday evening.

The visitors started brightly and Kieron Greene in the home goal had to make an important block after a home defender was robbed of the ball down by the corner flag and the ball was quickly transferred into a 6 yard box.

Rob Carr was next to steal the ball from a hesitant defender out on the right flank and delivered a first time cross that sped through the penalty area to safety.

The conditions were proving difficult and the game was being played at a frantic pace as the ball skidded off of the surface, the game was also very open and each side looked threatening every time they ventured forward.

Matt Benham flashed a header wide from a corner as the home side tried to wrestle the imitative from the visitors and then had a goal bound volley blocked from the next attack.

Alton then survived as Blackfield hit the woodwork three times in a five minute spell, all the shots came in from 25 yards and fortunately deflected away from goal rather than back into the danger area, was it going to be Alton's night?

Back the home side came and they created 2 really good opportunities themselves, on each occasion the shot that came in from really good positions but was straight at the visitors keeper who held on to ball well.

A breathless and open first 45 minutes that somehow remained goal less in relentless rain.

After an even opening 10 minutes of the second half the home side started to control the game. Matt Benham was seeing a lot of the ball and he was able to control the tempo of the game whilst Steve Black and Richie Hunter worked hard to help him gain the space he needed. Both Jack Fowler and Rob Carr were benefiting from his possession, the Alton wide players were being released in behind the defence at regular intervals but the visitors keeper was proving very difficult to beat in the one on ones that were being created.

On the hour came the breakthrough, Fowler in on goal having been released again down the left had a powerful shot blocked by the keeper, this time the ball fell invitingly to the edge of the penalty area where Rob Carr strode forward and blasted another shot at goal, somehow the retreating defenders blocked the shot on the line but George Bowerman was well placed to make sure. The referee later confirmed that Carr's strike had in fact gone over the line so he was awarded the goal.

The visitors were still having good periods of possession but the Alton defence kept them at arm's length by maintaining a really good shape ensuring Greene in the home goal was well protected.

The visitors then had a player sin binned in the 80th minute which effectively ended any hope that they might have had of rescuing a point from the game.
