Alton 0 - 2 AFC Portchester

Posted: 10.09.21

An entertaining game on Tuesday night that the visitors won pretty comfortably. Portchester threatened from the start and only the inside of the foot of the post stopped them taking a lead within the first 2 minutes of the game.

That near miss set the pattern of the first half as Alton struggled to contain the lively front two who were being supplied by some slick and positive attacking opportunities by their mobile midfielders.

The pace of Perkins and Knight kept the visitors rear-guard on alert and having nicked the ball off of a hesitant defender Perkins shot was well saved.

The home side were dealt a blow after 20 minutes when they lost central defender Scott Sanderson who had to leave the field of play when he took a nasty blow to the face that required hospital treatment.

Portchester took the initiative and opened the scoring on 32 minutes, another slick move down the left resulted in a simple finish from 10 yards.

The visitors then repeated the same trick down the right hand side on 41 minutes to take a two goal lead.

The major incident in the game came a couple of minutes before half time, Luke Perkins chase a ball into the box and whilst retreating was kicked by the visitors goalkeeper, a defender then chose to get involved and in a matter of seconds we had a melee of players pushing and shoving one another. Having calmed the situation the referee took the appropriate action and issued a red card to two Portchester players (not the goalkeeper) and Perkins.

10 against 9 in the second half changed the whole context of the game as there was now lots of space to be exploited, Alton were now dominating possession but knew that they could not just throw the ball into the box at will as the dominant centre back Pearce was marshalling his defence really well and winning all the contests in the air.

Numerous half chances came and went for the home side, Dryden was inches away from contacting with what would have been a free header from close range and the keeper did really well to scramble the ball off the line in a packed goalmouth.

Alton were patient in their build up and continued to probe and move the home defenders around the pitch but they kept a really good shape and deserved the little bit of luck they got when the home side had a goal disallowed with 10 minutes to go to the bemusement of both sets of supporters in the ground.

Indeed the visitors should have wrapped the game up with the best chance of the half, Worth who was a menace up front all evening rounded the home keeper but was thwarted when he scuffed his shot and the retreating Jamie Phillips comfortably carried the ball away from goal.

The visitors saw out the game and were very impressive throughout, in an attacking sense in the first half and defensively in the second.
