Alton 1 - 3 Sholing

Posted: 06.09.21

Alton exited the FA Cup on Saturday in front of a record crowd of 538 at their 3G Anstey Park Enclosure (not counting the many watching through the fence behind the goal!). This was the eighth highest published attendance of the 120 ties played in this first qualifying round. Well done and a huge thank-you to all who attended.

The home side gave a really good account of themselves and fought back strongly having gone 2 goals behind in the early stages of the game.

Alton started brightly and Luke Perkins threatened when he drove into the box but the defenders managed to smother his progress.

This early threat was to become more evident as the first half went on. On 10 minutes the visitors opened the scoring. A very strong challenge on Matt Bonham when a defender lunged in went unpunished by the referee much to the surprise of the home defenders and the home side. As the defenders hesitated waiting for a whistle Sholing broke and was turned into the net at the near post.

In today's game where a tackler must be in control and cannot show his studs this was a very disappointing decision by the officials.

This seemed to stun the home side and the visitors took full advantage and poured forward gaining numerous corners that Alton struggled to repel in the air.

Eventually another free header led to the second goal on 20 minutes. Any concerns around the ground that Alton might capitulate to the higher ranked side were quickly swept aside as the home side went on the offensive and though hard work and more possession clawed their way back into the game.

Whilst George Bowerman fought the two centre backs gaps started to appear and Luke Perkins was able to get on the ball and drive at the defence causing chaos.

On three excursions he was pulled back by a visitor who conceded a booking. Then he left two defenders in his wake before a last ditch tackle smothered his shot and on the third he was fouled in the penalty area conceding a penalty which Matt Graham coolly dispatched on 34 minutes.

At this stage in the game it is fair to say that Sholing might have been grateful to hear the half time whistle.

In the second half Sholing stole back the initiative and Keiron Greene in the home goal made a great save pushing a shot from long range onto the bar minutes before the visitors had a goal disallowed for a marginal offside.

Still the home side remained a threat on the break and the visitors keeper also had to be alert as he pushed shots from Matt Benham and Jack Fowler away for corners.

The third goal came mid-way through the half and from a home perspective will have been disappointing as they collectively might have dealt better in a allowing a striker too much space to glide through and coolly finish as Greene tried to shut him down.

As the game went into the the latter stages Sholing looked intent on containing the threat of the home side, taking up good spells of possession to slow the game down.

The home side continued to pursue a second goal that might have set up a grandstand finish but were unable to create a really good opportunity which they might have regretted not taking.

So many positives for the home side. A Record crowd of well over 500 were in attendance at the Anstey Park enclosure and they witnessed a really completive game played in good spirit.

Much progress has been made over the last couple of years and that was more than evident at the weekend.
