Match Report: Alton 3 - 0 Bradford Town

Posted: 25.08.21

The largest crowd seen at Anstey Park for some years witnessed a thoroughly entertaining and competitive FA Cup replay on Tuesday night.

In the first couple of minutes of the game the visitors lost a defender to injury, with no challenger near him he landed awkwardly making a clearance and after a significant delay was stretchered off of the field of play.

Much like the first game, this game was also played at a furious pace in the early stages and the visitors were dominant in possession without be able to create a clear cut chance as the home defence stood firm.

As Alton grew into the game they took the lead after 15 minutes. The ball was cleared to the edge of the box where Ritchie Hunter crashed a right foot half volley in off the right hand post into the back of the net.

Bradford got straight back at Alton and Matt Graham got a very important touch to a cross to the back post where a striker would have had a simple header from close range. Fortunately the offside flag would have also have saved the home side.

Both sides got forward as often as possible as the game ebbed and flowed and the wide players in both teams were getting early ball into both boxes.

The visitors had a real purple patch late in the first half and the home defence did well to block a fierce free kick from the edge of the box and then Henry Woodcock made a stunning safe when he tipped a shot from 25 yards onto the crossbar and the home defenders cleared the danger.

A frantic half of football.

Alton started the second half on the front foot at got the second goal on 52 minutes. Bradford were unable to clear a corner properly and when the ball fell to Scott Sanderson on the edge of the box he avoided two challenges before rolling the ball square to George Bowerman who passed the ball into the net from 18 yards to the delight of the home crowd.

This now allowed the home side to control the game and during goods spells of possession they were able to create some really good chances to finish the game off as a contest.

Oli Graham slipped Bowerman through one on one with keeper who did well to block with his legs, repeating something he had done well over the two games, Jack Fowler burst past three defenders on the left and crashed a shot off of the crossbar and Alton pressed.

At no stage did Bradford accept defeat they continued to pass the ball well and they remained a threat but the home defence stood up well and when an opportunity arose the ball seemed to run for them rather than the visitors.

On 90 minutes the home side scored again, Fowler and Ed Dryden took the ball into the corner to keep possession and engaged a group of home defenders. Between the two of them they created a crossing opportunity and Dryden delivered a delicious cross to the back post where Bowerman headed home from 6 yards.

This was a really was a competitive contest played in a good spirit over the two games.

Alton will now host Sholing in the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday 4th September. 3pm kick off.
