Alton Res. 2 - 3 Liss Athletic

Posted: 06.12.20

After about two months without a competitive fixture due to postponements and “Lockdown 2”, everyone involved (home and away) were just thankful to be back playing.

Unfortunately, for Alton, the away team took better advantage of the clearly apparent rustiness of the players.

Liss took the lead after an easy interception from a wayward pass from Sean Evans in the Alton defence. Alton huffed and puffed and deservedly equalised through a Dave Browning header, the inch perfect cross delivered by Lee Westbrook.

HT 1-1

Despite the words at half time, Alton came out for the second half and continued to struggle to find any rhythm and quality.

The second Liss goal came from a penalty awarded after a player was brought down by Jacob Channon after Regan Hitch gave the ball away softly.

More upset to come as Skipper Josh Brown was “sin binned” for dissent. During this period Liss added a third.

Alton continued to push and a late consolation goal from Chris Horton just wasn’t enough.

The game finished 2-3 with Liss deservedly progressing in the competition. Altons misery was compounded by a late flurry of yellow cards from the referee, a couple of which left most people (players and supporters) dumbfounded.

Reserve Manager Kevin Smith's frustrations at the final whistle were plain to see. "From start to finish we were toothless and on the whole inept" he said. "Far too many individual errors, decision making and execution of even the simplest pass seemed beyond us. The yellow cards for Sean and Lee? You tell me? I asked the referee about them at the end and in fairness to him he explained how he’d seen it. To me, one of there players holding Sean’s leg to prevent him moving away does not warrant a caution to Sean. A Liss player falling over when Lee was trying to take a throw in after this player persistently hampered him does not warrant a caution. Don’t get me wrong these decisions did not reflect on the result, nor our performance but it does make me despair as it does affect the players. We need to ensure that this very much below par performance does not carry over to next week in what seems to be the last fixture this year away to Clanfield (in the League) before yet another extended break. The lads know that they have a lot to prove after today, not just to me but to themselves."
