AFC Porchester 1 - 1 Alton (7-6 on penalties)

Posted: 22.08.19

Alton can count themselves unlucky to go out of the Hampshire Senior Cup at Premier AFC Porchester on Wednesday night.

It was Porchester who, with a flea in their ear and all over social media after their defeat on Saturday, started brightest as they used their pace down the wings to open Alton up, and it was no surprise that they opened the scoring after five minutes through a shot from the edge of the area by Ramsey.

What was a surprise though was that after taking the lead they didn't press on. This is full credit to Alton who suddenly realised that actually Portchester were not that different to them.

Alton came into the game and a fine shot by Luke Perkins forced Snelling to go full stretch to tip over the bar as Alton sort the equaliser.

Alex hooker and Matt Grindel in the centre of Alton's defence were dealing with most of the Porchester crosses and when they didn't Justin Courtnage's safe handling prevented any further mishaps.

The second half was as open as the first ended, with Alton perhaps having some of the better chances, but neither side really troubled either keeper until with eight minutes left Luke Perkins equalised as he placed his shot into the far corner.

And so the game headed to penalties. Porchester went first and with both keepers getting close, but not quite close enough the first five penalties by both sides were all scored to lead the game to sudden death.

With the advantage, Porchester scored twice, but unfortunalty Alton's seventh penalty went over the bar to give Porchester the win.

Alton can be proud of their performance against a Premier Division team who are one of the favorites to finish in the top positions in the league.

Next up at home v Folland Sports on Saturday in the league, and then on Tuesday away against Premier Division AFC Stoneham in the League Cup
