East Cowes Vics 1 - 4 Alton

Posted: 10.09.18

Wessex League Cup 2nd Round

Alton travelled to the island on Saturday for a Wessex League Cup match and finally took some of the chances they have been creating to recorded a fine victory.

With travel issues, a change in players and slight change in shape, appeared to make Alton a much more tight team. It was Vics who had the first effort when a long ball over the top caught Alton out but Matt Petts was equal to it.

It soon became apparent that with a very hard bobbly pitch it was going to be difficult for any free flowing football, a long clearance from Petts was cleared by Vics for a throw that came to nothing.

Fine work on Alton's right put Gavin Muir in on goal, but Hunt in the Vics goal saved for a corner. Unfortunalty for Alton, Bunyan headed the corner over. Petts had to be alert to save from Chapman, before intelligent running by Bunyan got him in behind the Vics defence and with the keeper in no mans land, his cross shot went just wide. Corbett set up Muir but his shot was also wide of the target.

Muir had another chance before Callum Burch curled wide. It looked like it was going to be another day of what if when Vics took the lead, the ball bounced about in the middle of the park and was played through to Burton - who looked suspiciously offside, but he ran through and slotted passed Petts for the first goal of the game.

Another long ball from Petts resulted in a corner, before Alton won a free kick, Matt Grahams free kick was headed agonisingly wide by Bunyan.

One down at half time, wise words were needed, and they were obviously delivered as Alton were soon level, good work by Joe Clarke on the left resulted in a fine cross and meant Bunyan couldn't miss with his header.

Alton were now in the ascendancy and Hunt in the Vics goal produced a fine double save to deny first Bunyan and then Muir's follow up shot. Matt Petts produced a fine save of his own to tip over a rasping shot by Burton. Corbett had a shot blocked, before Alton made a double substitution, which helped to create the second goal for Alton with Colbourne and Knee replacing Grenham and Muir.

With the Vics full back trying to shepherd the ball out of play, he allowed Reece Colbourne to get his foot to the ball and cross beyond the far post, Burch retrieved the ball and found Corbett who's cross was volleyed home by Danny Knee to give Alton a deserved lead.

It was now all Alton as they went for the jugular, Knee and Bunyan shot over, before Corbett got Alton's third from the penalty spot after he himself had been unceremoniously bought down in the area.

Chapman shot over for Vics, before Alton scored the forth, Knee had a shot that was deflected for a corner. Clarkes corner found Bunyan unmarked and his flick header found the back of the net with Hunt floundering.

And so a fine all round performance moved Alton in to the next round of the league cup.

More Cup action for Alton next weekend as they travel to play Hellenic League Abingdon United in the FA Vase.
