Alton 2 - 3 Whitchurch United

Posted: 25.08.18

Alton's indifferent start to the season continued on Friday night, with another mixed performance and Alton left to rue missed chances, while defensive mistakes at the other end were punished.

On a very wet and miserable night it was Whitchurch who started brighter, without creating any clear cut chances, until Fisher received the ball thirty yards from goal and he fizzed a shot over the bar.

Alton began to come into the game and forced a corner that came to nothing. Matt Petts had to be alert to save a Whitchurch free kick, before rather against the run of play Alton took the lead, a fine flowing move down Alton's right saw Steve Black cross for Matt Bunyan to play a delightful ball into the path of Max Smith who buried his shot in the corner of the net with Barnett routed to the spot.

It was now Alton's turn to be in the ascendancy and they should have gone further a head when Marcus Cousins beat the offside trap, but his lob over the on rushing Barnett went agonisingly the wrong side of the post.

Whitchurch then upped the anti and following a corner Josh Jellis equalised as his shot beat Petts, who did well to get a hand to it. Callum Burch had a shot saved before Alton should have had a penalty as Cousins was unceremoniously pushed to the ground in the Whitchurch penalty area. Almost immediately Whitchurch took the lead when Petts could only parry Butlers shot and Yeomans was on hand to put the loose ball into the net.

Worst was to follow for Alton as the referee decided Colbourne had committed a foul in the penalty area and Yeomans increased the lead to three one.

As the half ended Petts saved Alton from going further behind as Jellis looking suspiciously offside got through on goal but Petts saved for a corner.

The second half degenerated into a battle as Whitchurch were happy to hold onto what they had by fair means or foul and unfortunalty the referee decided that it was his job to brandish cards like confetti, Jellis was cautioned and then Colbourne was shown a second yellow for a rather innocuous challenge.

Alton changed their shape with Burch coming out wide and from his cross, Bunyan somehow screwed his shot wide, before Bunyan set up Cousins, but he slipped on the wet pitch.

Alton got back into the game with ten minutes left when George Spiers went on a run out of defence, and with players calling for a pass, he slid the ball under the keeper to give Alton hope of a draw.

With Alton now pressing for an equaliser they were thankful to Petts again as he saved from Pearson on the break. But try as they might the equaliser wouldn't come and another defeat ensued. After the game manager Mark Corbett said 'we need to play with intensity for the whole game and not just in bits and take our chances when we are on top'.

Next up for Alton is a home game against Laverstock on Tuesday and then a visit to US Portsmouth on Saturday, where Alton will be looking for a change in fortunes and a little bit of lady luck on there side.
