US Portsmouth 1 - 1 Alton

Posted: 22.04.18

Alton travelled to forth placed US Portsmouth on Saturday for their last game of the season and came away with a creditable draw.

Before the game US still had aspirations to sneak the third promotion place, so it was no surprise that they started brightly and put Alton on the back foot. After a cagy few minutes they took the lead when following a through ball Tom Jeffes found himself with the freedom of the penalty area to give Matt Petts no chance.

This seemed to shake Alton out of their end of season slumbers and a Danny Knee cross just evaded Scott Sanderson. Jeffes had another shot but Petts was equal to it. Joe Clarke played a delightful through ball but it was just to hard for Jack Chandler and the ball ran through to the keeper. US broke through and Adam Allaway got back to clear, another Knee cross was just to high for Max Paddon, before Petts had to be alert to save from Cuthbert. Sanderson flicked on Petts's kick, but Chandlers cross was claimed by the keeper. Dark shot wide before Petts was forced to race out of his area to clear the danger.

A fine move involving Paddon, Sanderson and Chandler resulted in an Alton corner, which Williams headed wide. US forced a corner as the half came to an end.

Once again US came out on the front foot as they sensed the victory they needed and Petts was forced to save twice in quick succession from Jeffes and Franklyn, With the second goal not forthcoming Alton started to come back into the game Chandler crossed but there was no one in the box to get on the end of it. Matt Graham in a rare foray forward had a shot the went over, before Dark missed an open goal after Glen had got down the wing and his cross was put on a plate for Dark who somehow screwed his shot wide with the goal gaping. Allaway crossed and Knee headed goal wards but straight at the keeper.

Soon after Joe Clarke had the ball in the net from Paddon's cross but the lino decided that the ball had gone out of play before the cross. Clarke shot wide before US created three or four good chances that Alton were equal to Petts saved with his feet, before Smith shot which was deflected for a corner which Graham headed clear. Petts had to be alert to deflect a miss directed clearing header from Simon Wright, before Knee's cross just evaded Sanderson and was cleared for a corner. From the corner Alton thought they had won a penalty when the ball appeared to hit the arm of the defender on the line, but the referee waved their appeals away.

It wasn't long before a penalty was awarded though as Clarke was upended in the box by Andrews. Jack Chandler kept his cool to beat the keeper and secure Alton's equaliser.

Jack Chandler Penalty

Petts had to be alert to tip over a free kick before the game came to an end and for the second week running Alton had put paid to their oppositions chance of promotion.
