Hengrove Athletic 4 - 2 Alton (AET)

Updated: 23.10.17

Alton made the long journey to Bristol in the FA Vase to play Western League Hengrove Athletic on Saturday and can count themselves unlucky to lose.

Facing storm Brian blowing straight into their faces in the first half Alton managed to weather the storm and at the break the game was goal less.

Hengrove had the majority of chances Billy Vaughan shot over, before Matt Petts had to save with his feet, from the follow up Lewis Dunn hit the post. Alton forced a free kick and from the clearance Joe Clarke shot over the bar.

Alton were coming to terms with the wind and a move between Watts and Knee, was cleared before Jack Fillingham shot wide for Hengrove. Danny Knee was causing problems with his pace and when he was fouled Clarke's free kick was tipped over the bar by Carl Bush, from the corner Chris Adkins headed back but Sean Hayes was unable to keep his shot down.

Hengrove finished the half on top and Adkins had to be alert to clear as Vaughan threatened.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, Alton hoped to take advantage, but it was Petts who was called into action first as he saved from Fillingham. With the referee trying to play advantage the game started to become a scrap. Joe Clarke had to be alert as following a mistimed pass he got back to block as Vaughan looked like he was about to open the scoring.

Reece Colbourne had a run and shot before Hengrove took the lead in controversial fashion, the ball ran across the Alton box and Gary Shorney's shot found the corner of the net, the linesman flagged for an offside with the Hengrove forward in Petts eye line, however the referee overruled and the goal stood.

Incensed Alton attacked and once again Knee was bought down. It was Knee himself who got up to curl the free kick passed Bush to draw Alton level. Alton were now getting on top Ollie Copplestone shot over, before Alton broke up a Hengrove attack, Alton broke with a three on one and Sanderson was fouled by the last man, but again the referee decided to only award a free kick. In an almost identical position as the goal, but this time Knee's shot hit the wall.

Soon after Alton deservedly took the lead, when George Callard got down the right wing his cross was headed back across goal by Danny Knee and Sanderson applied the finishing touch to give Alton the lead with just three minutes left.

Hengrove threw caution to the wind and pushed players up and with Alton having to defend deep it was backs to the wall and unfortunalty for Alton in the third added minute Hengrove equalised to bring the scores level at full time. So Extra time started and Alton should have gone ahead immediately when Knee got down the right played the ball across goal and somehow Sanderson managed to screw his shot wide. Worse was to follow for Alton as from the goal kick Hengrove went ahead when Shorney was allowed time to slot passed Petts. Petts tipped over from Ben Crewe before the referee again became the centre of attention when he awarded Hengrove a penalty when Fillingham fell over in the box as the ball was running out for a goal kick. Fillingham himself dusted himself down to give Petts no chance and put the game out of Alton's reach.

Alton huffed and puffed during the second half of extra time Callard had a shot blocked, Burch was unceremoniously dumped to the ground by Scott Lewis, but again the referee declined to use his note book. Knee shot wide, but in the end it turned out not to be Alton's day.

Alton have a week off with no game this Saturday, they are next in action on the 4th November when Tadley Calleva are visitors to The Enclosure for a Wessex League game.
