Alton Amazons 3 - 1 Winklebury Wizards
Updated: 08.10.17A well faught game against a very good Winklebury team. Winklebury's passing at times in the midfield was excellent and caused us big problems at the beginning of the game.
To their credit, the Amazons weathered the initial opening exchanges and dealt with their very quick and skilful forward and captain.
Over the course of the game the Amazons began to carve out chances, we found success down the left and right sides whilst a strong presence up front meant our "shots on target" stats were high.
The breakthrough came towards the end of the half, a well placed pass from Freya saw Katherine get round the back of their defence and was able to put away the rebound which put the Amazons 1-0 up at half time.
The second half was much closer and the Amazons defended heroically at times putting their bodies in the way to stop some well crafted Winklebury attacks. An unfortunate miss kick from Sophie after a good attack saw the ball loop over a stranded Grace and into our own net.
A little luck went our way however, handball in the area gave us a penalty which was cooly dispatched by Georgia. This was followed almost immediately by a well taken goal by Georgina putting the Amazons 3-1 up.
Late drama towards the end as Hollie, in a desperate attempt to stop their attacker going through, pulls her down and concedes a penalty. This was saved brilliantly by Grace who spared the Amazons a very nervy last few minutes.
Congratulations girls, a terrific performance today against a very good opponent.
