Alton Youth 3 - 0 Portsmouth

Updated: 04.09.17

This was another step in preparation for Altons first Allied Counties League on 12th September at home against Cove. The game was an enternaing encounter with both sides playing the game the right way and in a good spirit.

Portsmouth started the game the better, keeping the ball better than alton, that said the home side kept their shape well and limited the visitors to long range shots. Alton themselves grew into the game and the first chance of the half fell to Liam Knight who shot wide from 10 yards. The first goal came midway through the half when Jack Grover challenged the keeper and bundled the ball over the line. With this the home side grew in confidence with the back four of Younger,Ventham,Kennett & Deere playing out from the back at every opportunity. This stretched the visitors and Alton made more chances with Joe Abel heading wide a shot from Ellison Rogers was well blocked. With good delivery from Chris Horton alton carried a threat from set pieces, Alton were given free kick 25 yards from goal centrally (after shooting session night before) skipper Louis Kennett took control and unleashed a thunderbolt which the keeper could get nowhere near. Pompey were still carrying a threat and Toby Glover in the home goal saved well from a shot outside the box and the visitors went close from resulting corner. Final chance of the half was created after another free flowing move from alton could not be turned in at far post by Joe McLeod.

With three changes at half time, Ben Carlisle ,James Laird & Joe Gasson all settled into game quickly and this didn't inturpt the momentum alton had gained (which is sometimes the case with lots of changes). Alton continued to create chances but could not convert them which was a bit of a shame. Two further changes saw Will Mead and Harry Rolfe come on and again settled straight into game. Portsmouth got a foothold into the game midway through the half and after a save from Glover the portsmouth forward shot over from close range. With some disgruntled lads on the bench (nobody wanted to come off, which is a great attitude) alton scored the third after a great flick on from James Laird, Harry Rolfe broke through and beat the keeper at his near post from the edge of the area, sealing an impressive victory and as importantly a confidence boost before the start of the season.

This was an exceptional performance from ALL with everybody contributing to the game and doing jobs asked of them. Even those asked to play out of position done what was asked of them and more. Standards have been set now.
