Alton 5 - 1 Andover New Street

Posted: 27.02.17

Alton dominated this Wessex League match from start to finish and it wasn't hard to see why New Street are near the bottom of the table.

They were not helped when they had defender Gary Thorne sent off on twenty minutes when he bought Matt Jackson down as he bore through on goal.

The game started with Alton on the attack, Jackson shot wide and Scott Sanderson had a shot saved before Alton had to re-shuffle as Jacob Channon was forced off after what looked like a foul to be replaced by Jonny Way. Sanderson's movement was causing the New Street defence problems and he got away down the right and his pass found Taylor Watts whose shot was saved.

Then came the dismissal as Jackson ran on to a Sean Hayes through ball, only to be bought down as he skipped past Thorne who was the last defender. Hayes's free kick was deflected away by the wall. The goal Alton had been threatening wasn't long in coming as Joe Green got down the right and squared the ball for Sanderson to bundle home at the far post. This seemed to sting New Street into life and Jack Hughes had a shot saved by debutant keeper James Kennedy.

Alton doubled the lead when this time Jackson got away down the right and pulled back for Sanderson to score. This second goal knocked the stuffing out of New Street and it appeared that Alton could score at will, with Sanderson, Watts and Gavin Muir having shots blocked or saved. New Street were thrown an unexpected lifeline as the half ended when a speculative shot by Jazz Bevis somehow slipped past Kennedy to reduce the arrears.

Any hope New Street had of a comeback were snuffed out in the first minute of the second half as Matt Jackson was on hand to turn in Taylor Watts's inviting cross, to restore the two goal cushion. New Street then became very disjointed and started arguing amongst themselves as some decide the way to stop the Alton attack was by any means, But Alton rose above it and carried on playing the football, Callum Burch swept home for number four after another flowing move.

The game became almost like an attack v defence training game, Burch had a shot tipped over, Sanderson headed over and Phil Moore had an acrobatic shot saved. Sanderson was forced off with an injury to be replaced by Oli Graham. And it was Graham who finished the scoring. A rare New Street attack and shot was save by Kennedy, his long clearance was superbly bought down by Watts, who left his defender for dead, his shot was parried by the keeper but Graham was on hand to touch home from a yard out.

Again Alton had chances to increase the lead as Muir, Regan Hitch and Moore had shots off target.

And so the match ended with an Alton victory and delight for most of the 154 watch spectators who took advantage of Alton's half term, half price special.
