Match report by Dave Hawtin
This league cup tie was always going to be a challenge, away to the unbeaten leaders of the Northern section of the Combined Counties league.
The home side dominated territory and possession in the first half but the visitors dug in and worked hard to close down the space and not allow them clear cut chances on goal . One rasping shot that goalkeeper Douglas deflected away for a corner and some goalmouth scrambles and errant finishing were survived as we went into the break all square , frustration written across the home sides faces as they left the field of play.
A change of shape and a couple of enforced changes for the visitors led to a much more competitive second half. A couple of early chances came and went for the home side and the tide and feel to the game was slowly beginning to change . Alton were now clawing their way back into the possession and territory stats and becoming a real threat down both flanks , they were spending a lot more time in the attacking third of the pitch . The home side didn’t heed the warnings and on 82 minutes Alton snatched the lead with a delightfully worked goal, Alton broke down an attack and moved the ball positively through the pitch where David Garlinge split open the defence with a perfectly weighted pass that found Felix Hills clear on goal , he rounded the keeper and slid the ball home into an empty net.
In the last 15 minutes or so as the home side chased an equaliser the visitors might well have extended their lead but there was a final whistle was blown and a very hard fought victory confirmed.
Broadfields no doubt will regret not making enough of their dominance, but as a wise man once said "football is a funny old game".
