A strong battle between two good footballing sides ultimately ended with Alton taking a deserved 2–0 victory in a true tale of two halves.
The first half was an evenly matched contest, with both teams battling hard and largely cancelling each other out. The majority of the action took place in the middle of the pitch, with neither side able to create many clear-cut opportunities.
Both teams showed plenty of determination and organisation, but neither could find the breakthrough before the interval.
The second half, however, belonged to Alton.
It took just four minutes after the restart for the deadlock to be broken. In the 49th minute, Cara Gittins produced a delicious through ball that sliced the Aldershot defence in two and released Teyla through on goal. Teyla showed great composure, rounding the goalkeeper before calmly slotting the ball into the empty net to give Alton a deserved 1–0 lead.
An unfortunate injury for Aldershot disrupted their afternoon, while Alton began to take greater control of possession. Despite that pressure, Aldershot remained extremely well drilled and organised, making Alton work for every opportunity and refusing to let the game get away from them.
Alton continued to push for the goal that would finally put the contest to bed, but they had to wait until the 93rd minute.
Chelsie Stewart whipped a dangerous driven cross into the area, where Jodie collected brilliantly, skipped beyond a defender and calmly slotted the ball into the corner to seal the victory.
Full-time: Alton 2–0 Aldershot
A hard-fought performance against a very well-organised Aldershot side, with Alton showing patience, composure and quality when it mattered to make their second-half dominance count.
