Match report by Ian Hall
Alton travelled to unbeaten Fleet Town on Saturday 12th and were on the receiving end as the hosts ran out comfortable 3 0 winners to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Headed goals from Ollie Burke in the first half plus Alex MacAllister and skipper Aaron Burchett after the break were more than enough for the home side who dominated throughout. Alton, missing eight first team regulars, could only muster a couple of half chances and their one shot on target, during a better spell just into the second period, was saved by the Fleet keeper.
If this was perhaps something of a free hit for Alton against a very good side, they were under the cosh right from the outset and could never put the hosts under any real pressure. Former Alton striker MacAllister outpaced the defence and rifled the ball into the net after three minutes but was adjudged to have been half a toenail offside – it was just about the only thing the ref got right all match and it felt like every time Alton won a tackle against bigger and stronger opponents, he awarded a foul.
If this early let off was a warning, Alton couldn’t find an immediate solution and Fleet’s strikers got in behind Alton time and again. Charlie Burns made a good save at Ollie Burke’s feet after Macallister’s flick on and another effort from the right side was flashed just wide of the far post. Several other opportunities went begging but inevitably the pressure paid off and after 26 minutes Burke nodded in the opener from a dinked cross.
Alton were struggling to get a foothold with Fleet winning absolutely everything at the back. The Brewers brighter moments inevitably came though Hadif Darwysh and Sav Shah's pace on the flanks and after a quick turn, Shah surprised the keeper with an early strike but it was off target.
Alton would have taken 1 0 after a totally one-sided half and having switched round the formation shortly into the second period, with Manny Acheampong adding pace up front and Ben Matthews dropping to centre back, they did have a brighter period. After Shah miscued from a Darwish cross, they had another strike well saved.
The respite was short-lived though and Fleet scored a 2nd and effectively sealed it when immediately after making a great save, Burns came a long way for a cross and was beaten to it by MacAllister who flicked the ball into the empty net on 65 minutes.
Alton couldn’t get back into the match and after a long drawn-out substitution before a free kick, appeared to lose concentration leaving Fleet’s skipper unmarked at the back post to nod home a third.
The next two fixtures see Alton looking to get back to winning ways against the bottom two clubs, starting with a trip to Godalming on Tuesday 15th followed by Eversley at the Exclusive Networks on Saturday 19th.
