Brewers bow out of Hampshire Cup after impressive showing at Eastleigh
Alton's Hampshire Cup journey came to an end on Tuesday evening, but the Brewers could take plenty of positives from an excellent showing against National League Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium.
The hosts fielded a strong mixed side containing first-team players returning to fitness, others on the fringes of the senior squad and a number of their academy prospects, providing Alton with a real test against opposition several levels higher in the football pyramid.
Unsurprisingly, Eastleigh enjoyed more of the ball during the opening exchanges, but Alton looked organised and comfortable without it and certainly weren't there simply to make up the numbers.
The Brewers had a huge opportunity to take a surprise lead after 32 minutes. Ben Matthews found himself in a great position inside the Eastleigh area but took just a fraction too long to get his shot away, allowing the home defence to recover. Eastleigh began to threaten more as the half progressed, sending a good opportunity over the bar on 37 minutes before forcing an excellent save from the Alton goalkeeper three minutes later, diving sharply to his left to keep the scores level.
Alton deservedly headed into the dressing room at half-time with the game still goalless. Eastleigh had enjoyed the greater share of possession, but the Brewers had defended superbly and had created arguably the best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes through Matthews.
Alton started the second half with real promise, with Hadif Darwysh continuing to cause Eastleigh problems. Hadif was excellent throughout the evening, constantly looking to get at the hosts down their left-hand side and eventually drawing a booking from the Eastleigh left-back. The complexion of the game changed on 66 minutes when Eastleigh were reduced to ten men. If anything, though, the dismissal seemed to stir the home side into life.
Eastleigh fired another opportunity over the bar on 68 minutes before going even closer two minutes later when an effort came back off the woodwork. The pressure was beginning to build and eventually told. Connor Underhill drove at the Alton defence from the left before finding Dion Rankine, who finished a well-worked move to finally break the deadlock with around a quarter of an hour remaining. To Alton's credit, heads didn't drop.
The Brewers came close to producing an immediate response through the impressive Darwysh, who again caused problems before forcing a good save from the Eastleigh goalkeeper. With Alton continuing to compete and search for a way back into the tie, Eastleigh eventually added a second in the 91st minute through Connor Underhill to put a slightly harsh gloss on a game that had remained finely poised for so long.
The final whistle brought a 2–0 defeat, but there was plenty for Alton to be proud of after holding National League opposition goalless for more than 70 minutes and continuing to play with ambition even after falling behind. There were excellent performances throughout the side, with Hadif a constant threat going forward and Alex Lever producing a particularly impressive display to earn Alton's Man of the Match award.
Ultimately, Eastleigh's quality told, but the Brewers can return to league action with their heads held high after a performance that showed they were more than capable of competing with players from considerably higher up the football pyramid.
Alton return to league action this Saturday when they travel to league leaders Fleet Town. Kick off 19:45.
