Match report by Ian Hall
Virginia Water handed Alton a second successive defeat at the Exclusive Networks Stadium and the home side could have no complaints, the heavy 1 4 scoreline reflecting a poor display in the second half.
Just as they had on Monday Alton went behind to an early goal and, once again, they got themselves back into the match just before the interval through Manny Acheampong’s header - but this time Alton were dreadful after the break and in truth the final margin could have been even worse.
Having tried a number of center forwards this season Luke Turkington went for a pacy forward line giving Acheampong a start through the middle flanked by Hadif Darwysh and Sav Shah and they showed their intent right from the kick-off with a couple of lively breaks. From more Alton pressure on 7 minutes, Virginia Water took the lead in the blink of an eye. A ball played out from defence to Lewis Flatman on half-way saw the former Farnham man turn and fire a 25 yard diagonal ball into the path of their fast-breaking left winger who whipped over a teasing cross and Tyler Robinson, who had played against Alton for Yateley, arrived to bury the header.
After this set-back Alton looked to build their way into the game and frequently got into threatening positions, forcing a number of corners and free kicks but never really troubling the visitors apart from a Matt Benham shot, which bounced up forcing a good save from the keeper. At the other end Virginia Water dispossessed Alton’s midfield too cheaply twice, Flatman curling just wide from one and Robinson being denied by a smart save from Charlie Burns in goal for Alton. Flatman was directing the visitors play with his touch and vision, able to instantly control long balls with his back to goal and seeing and finding runners behind him.
Nevertheless Alton were competitive and in one spell saw 5 or 6 shots in quick succession blocked in the box. On the stoke of half time the pressure paid off – a deep Sav Shah cross found Ellis McLean steaming into the box but at full stretch he did well to get to the ball at all, only for it to smack up off the post and bar. When, after an age, the ball dropped to the other post Acheampong produced an enormous leap to nod home over the center back.
If the half-time talk followed the pattern of the previous match, the outcome could barely have been any different. Alton went behind shortly after the resumption when a pass straight up the middle found Robinson who fired in his second. Virginia Water then had a third chalked off and had hit the post before Alton had penalty claims for a handball on the hour mark. Flatman made another good chance for Kingsley Etefia who shot wide and then shortly after the winger cut inside and hit a shot on target, Burns save falling to Danyaal Iqbal to tap home.
Robinson was replaced by Stuart Mortimer, who then bagged himself a goal from the spot after some defending that rather suggested Alton had thrown in the towel.
