Alton 1 - 2 Badshot Lea

An injury time penalty, converted by Badshot Lea’s centre forward Kayne Moyo, earned them a 1 2 win at the Exclusive Networks Stadium after Ben Matthews' first half spot-kick had cancelled out Mayo’s 7th minute opener.

Alton’s own penalty, awarded when the visiting keeper up-ended Jamie Phillips, came after a five minute spell of sustained pressure at the end of an otherwise poor first half from the hosts but if they were a shade fortunate to go in level, they completely dominated the second period before the late sucker-punch that inflicted a first league reverse.

A frenetic start saw early chances for both sides – a hashed clearance from Badshot’s keeper was struck off target by Chad Goulter before a low drilled cross was poked just wide of the gaping net by Badshot’s Archie Mills, sliding in at the back post. From the resulting goal kick Alton swept up the pitch before a loose pass turned over possession and Moyo ran forward unchallenged to score from the edge of the box.

Thereafter Badshot were the better side, dominating possession, looking sharper going forwards and tidy at the back. For long periods Alton could barely string more than a couple of passes together and having turned over possession yet again, the pacy Fareed Hakeem-Habeeb drove goalward before unleashing a curling effort onto the bar, just as he had in the earlier cup tie.

Alton belatedly got their act together in a spell leading up to the interval. Matt Benham’s clever short free kick freed up Goulter to deliver an inviting cross which a stretching Alex Lever could only direct over the bar with Ben Matthews probably better placed behind him. A direct Benham free kick was unconvincingly parried by the keeper and yet another Benham free kick was flicked across goal by Matthews and with Phillips always favourite to win the loose ball, the keeper’s charge was rash. He nearly atoned for the error by getting a strong hand to Matthew’s penalty but it still found the corner to send the sides in level.

A half time cuppa clearly worked wonders as Alton were a different side in the second period. Goulter playing in a more advanced midfield role was increasingly influential and with the passing beginning to click, they looked to work Sav Shah and Hadif Darwysh into more dangerous areas. Alton created numerous opportunities but three in particular should have resulted in goals. Argjend Ahmetaj’s slick angled pass between players found Darwish who beat his man and flashed a cross which a flying Goulter headed just wide. Another good move saw Ellis McLean on the overlap, he found Matthews who’s lay off sat up nicely for Shaw but the winger blazed over. With 5 minutes left Benham broke clear in the box and was clearly tripped from behind only for the ref to a brandish a yellow for a dive.

Badshot had barely had a sniff in the second half but as every fan knows you will always get one chance. A hoof up the pitch on 90 minutes was fatally allowed to bounce and Hakeem-Habeeb pounced, getting goal side before accelerating clear, nudging the ball round the Alton keeper and going down under the resulting challenge. This time the ref, inevitably, was in no doubt and Moyo kept his nerve to drill home.
