Match report by Ian Hall
A backs-to-the-wall effort from Alton away at 4th placed Abbey Rangers earned a second draw in a week - Zac Nash’s effort just after half time cancelled out by a late strike from the rampant hosts, who dominated possession and peppered the Alton goal.
In contrast to the weekend the pitch was in good nick and the home side were at it from the first whistle, with Alton pegged back in their half for the first 10 minutes. Indeed it took half an hour for Alton to register an effort – a tame shot from range – by which time the hosts, attacking at speed down either flank and passing crisply, had already had five clear openings. Their centre forward missed two one on ones – first tamely hooking a shot wide and then a better effort smothered by Casey Balfour in goal for Alton, before their best chance came after David Garlinge appeared to be pushed off the ball. Some swift passing on the transition worked a gaping open goal for the right winger to tap home – but he elected to lean back and send it into orbit.
By the time Balfour made another smart save on the stroke of half time, the hosts had had 10 good chances but to their credit Alton had been working hard to stay in the contest and didn’t simply roll over.
On the resumption Alton had the ball in the net inside a minute. A move down the right created a shooting chance which was only half blocked and the loose ball was tucked away by Zac Nash. With the players lined up for the restart and the fans digesting what had happened, the ref and linesman, who hadn’t flagged, had a long chat and after some minutes delay, concluded Nash was offside from the original shot.
If the management were angry and the fans deflated, the team merely went straight back up the pitch and scored again. Matt Benham dispossessed an Abbey player, slipped in Nash and he finished for a second time.
Thereafter the game resumed much the same pattern as the first half – Abbey piled forwards though most of their finishing was wayward. When they did get an effort on goal they found the Alton defence resolute, with the returning Tolu Ajayi-Obi making several clearances.
The one-way traffic did eventually tell on 84 minutes but the goal itself was a shade fortunate; a ball played into the substitute centre forward who turned his man and shot, this time on target though straight at the keeper and it squirmed between his legs. Inevitably Abbey piled forward in search of a winner and the best effort was from Josh Stepney who’s dipping shot was well tipped over by a fine save from Balfour.
Despite the largely one-way traffic, Alton almost nicked it right at the end. James Sykes, who had chased everything since coming on, latched onto an under-hit back pass and poked it past the keeper but wide of the target. That really would have been a smash and grab but nevertheless the side claimed another good point
