Match report by Ian Hall
Promotion chasing Knaphill secured a 2–0 victory at The Exclusive Networks Stadium but Alton more than held their own and the crowd were fully appreciative of a good effort from the home side.
After the recent departures and upheaval, Alton fielded just four starters from the win against Guildford. There were plenty of familiar faces though with Jack Fowler, Tom Hill and Joe Wotton all returning and the evergreen Scott Sanderson slotting in at centre back.
Promotion chasing Knaphill had beaten Alton 8 1 in the cup recently but if they had expected an easy fixture here it wasn't the case. Alton threatened inside three minutes when Benham won the ball and drove forward only to lift his effort over the bar. A further move saw three Alton shots blocked in quick succession as the hosts made a good start to the match.
Knaphill then took a fortunate lead on 14 minutes. A good ball behind the defence sent Collins away but his shot was smothered by an exceptional sliding block from Sanderson, racing back. As the ball rolled towards the edge of the area, away from the goal, both players leapt up but the merest of touches sent the forward crashing back down again and the referee pointed to the spot.
The penalty was well hit to Adam Melville's left but he nearly pulled off a save, diving full length to get a hand to the ball, only to see it go in off the post.
Alton responded well to the set-back and largely controlled the play and created some nice moves, the best of which saw Garlinge arriving late to meet a cross but he couldn't keep the ball down.
Though not at their best Knaphill did show glimpses and came close to scoring a worldy - a superb diagonal ball perfectly into the path of the speeding Murdoch was met first time on the volley but the effort smashed back off the post. More often than not though, when they did get the ball into the box they found Melvillle in commanding form, dominating his area.
Alton nearly levelled before half-time. A left-footed corner from the right curled dangerously under the bar with the keeper beaten, but a defender managed to clear it off the line.
In the second half Alton were the better side and played some nice football. The best chance came from a dangerous counter - Darwysh drove forward, combined with Benham and saw his cross met by Garlinge but he couldn't find the target with a header.
A rare Knaphill attack saw a dipping cross-shot tipped over by Melville and they had claims for a second penalty which looked more convincing than the first. Shortly after however they did put the game to bed with a good goal - winning the ball back deep in their own half before working it forward quickly to Robertson who finished smartly for 0 2.
On the back of two training sessions and against a decent side, Alton had looked to have their work cut out but to a man they put in a shift. Whilst the visitor were ultimately more clinical, on another day the home side could have got something from the match and whilst the disappointment was evident, this was a worthy effort.
