Match report by Dave Hawtin
Stalemate on an autumnal afternoon at Thatcham on Saturday.
Upon reflection neither side did enough, or worked the opposition goalkeeper to stake a real claim the victory, even though the visitors created a couple of really good opportunities.
The visitors bossed both territory and possession in the first half and had some joy down both flanks throughout the half.
They took the lead in the 21st minute. Zapata exploited the space with his pace down the left hand side and his perfectly weighted cross fell to Zak Nash who blasted home from 12 yards.
The home side were level within 10 minutes. Yet again Alton were to concede from a dead ball situation. This time a free kick out wide was headed home, somewhat unchallenged.
Just minutes later the home side were awarded a penalty. A very very soft penalty decision it has to be said. Justice was done when Adam Melville dived to his right to make a terrific safe.
It would have been both frustrating and puzzling had the visitors gone in behind at half time as Thatcham at no point during the half looked threatening.
The second half was a battle. The visitors missed the couple of goalscoring chances that were mentioned earlier in this piece, continued to boss possession but it is during those spells that you need to take the initiative and see off the opposition.
Once again the last 10 minutes was rather more tense for the visiting spectators than it might have been. Melville dealt well with a couple of shots from distance as the home side became bolder in their approach.
All square at the final whistle.
Alton travel to Redhill this coming Saturday to end a run of five consecutive away games. 3pm kick-off.
