Match report by Dave Hawtin
Alton's run of home games ended in a disappointing defeat on Saturday as yet again they were undone by a goal in added on time.
The visitors started much the brighter of the two sides and struck early on when a cross into the box found an unmarked striker who headed home.
It was a nervy period for the home side as Chipstead had some really inventive attackers in their lineup.
Having gained a foothold in the game the home side were level on 25 minutes. A really good goal it was too. Stepney, Macallister and Tanner worked the ball into Nash in the penalty area, his first touch sat up nicely and he hammered a shot home from 15 yards.
Back came the visitors and they regained the lead when the defence dealt poorly with a huge clearance from their keeper. The ball was allowed to take one bounce over the heads of the defenders allowing a striker clear on goal to confidently finish with a deft chip.
Having survived another good chance for the visitors, the home side were given a lifeline on 39 minutes. Poynter pressurised a defender into an error and in his panic to recover the situation he clumsily fouled him in the penalty area. Poynter confidently dispatched the penalty.
All square at the break in a see saw first half.
The tone of the second half was set from the off. First Poynter and then Nash were both foiled by the keeper in one on ones inside the first five minutes of the start.
The home side went onto to dominate territory and possession for the next half hour creating decent chances at regular intervals but the very tall and strong visiting goalkeeper was repelling everything thrown at him.
As we went into injury time another home 4 on 2 attack broke down and at the other end the visitors released a striker through a large hole in the home defence to win the 3 points.
It was a game Alton should have won but throughout the second half the numerous numerical overloads they created failed when the final ball continually let them down.
Alton travel away to league leaders Cobham tomorrow (Tuesday) night. 7.45pm kick-off.
