Match report by Dave Hawtin
At the start of play these two sides were only separated alphabetically as they had identical playing records.
These 90 minutes were to prove that position, as the two sides could only be split by a stunning strike just a minute before the break.
It was a competitive game throughout with both sides well organised and comfortable on the ball. Chances were at a real premium with neither goalkeeper required to make a save that would make a difference and both handling everything really competently in the air.
The winning goal was probably worthy of winning a game. Owen Tanner broke down an attack at full back then showed great composure to step inside a couple of players as he strode into the attacking half and strike a delightful crossfield ball into his opposite full back Angel Zapata who drove into the box and delivered a finish high into the net at the far post.
The visitors started the second half quicker and had two very close misses, both from range but without hitting the target.
The game developed into a tense contest with good opportunities created without either side working the keeper.
10 minutes added didn’t go down well with the home fans. Most of those accumulated from an official who appeared to get a little too involved in a game without a single unnecessary or bad tackle.
The visitors will be disappointed they did not get anything from the game. The home side might suggest they did just enough to take the points.
Alton continue the run of home games tomorrow evening (21st) when Epsom & Ewell will the visitors to The Exclusive Networks Stadium, 7.45pm kick-off.
