Match report by Dave Hawtin
A dominant and disciplined performance from the home side on a gloriously sunny afternoon resulted in was eventually a comfortable win.
The visitors were very competitive in the early stages of the game but Alton rode that period well and took a firm grip on proceedings.
Merrifield was just wide from an early chance but the territorial advantage eventually told on 24 minutes. The visitors were opened up again and the referee played a good advantage in the penalty area and when Alex Macalister was upended but the ball fell nicely to Adam Poynter who clinically finished from close range.
The visiting keeper was kept busy and Eversley survived another close call when Macalister stroked home only to be denied by the assistant's flag.
The home side were not to be denied though and extended the lead when Matt Benham's cross fell to Josh Millo, his first touch set him up nicely to drill the ball into the far corner. You had to be there to appreciate the finish, it was that good.
The home side were now in control and were maintaining possession and moving the ball around really well. Macalister was denied again by the assistant's flag, this one looked even closer.
The third goal that they deserved came on 87 minutes. A collective move that saw Poynter drift inside onto his left foot this time and curl a lovely finish in at the far post, no chance for the keeper with this one either.
The final action of the game summed up Macalister's afternoon when the keeper pulled a really good save to deny him the goal he deserved.
A really good collective performance with everyone contributing.
Alton continue a run of home games this coming Saturday (18th) when Sutton Common Rovers will the visitors to The Exclusive Networks Stadium, 3pm kick-off.
