Match report by Dave Hawtin
Alton progressed in the FA Cup with what was ultimately a comfortable win on Saturday.
It was the visitors who were fastest out of the traps and they definitely dominated the territory in the first 15 to 20 minutes of the game, but they were stunned on 6 minutes with what is likely one of the goals of the round. Ed Dryden delivered an angled delivery in behind the right full back and Adam Poynter instinctively lashed the ball into the far corner with his left foot from the corner of the penalty area.
The game remained nip and tuck and the visitors nearly drew level when an audacious shot from the half way line bounced back into play off of the crossbar and was cleared.
As the home side grew into the game it was them that bought two decent saves from the visiting keeper keeping out Tanner and MacAllister, before another rapid break resulted in Marshall’s shot deflecting off of a defender and spinning up and onto the bar before it was hacked away.
The lead was extended on 42 minutes with another super finish. Josh Millo swopped passes with Poynter and curled his effort into the far corner again giving the keeper no chance.
A couple of minutes into the second half and the third and probably decisive goal. MacAllister nonchalantly heading home from close range from a well delivered corner.
Alton were now well in control and dominating possession not giving the visitors much in the way of any significant chances.
Then another delightful goal on 75 minutes. The ball was managed through a passage of passes and clipped into a great area to find the marauding Poynter who delivered a peach of a cross right into that no man’s land which defenders and goalkeepers hate where Marshall arrived to finish first time.
This period allowed manager Kev Adair to utilise his bench to good effect and the momentum didn’t change.
The icing on the cake came on 87 minutes with another goal. Skipper Alex Merrifield arrived right on cue to glance a header into the net from another well delivered corner.
The only bad news from the afternoon was what looks like a serious injury to Jamie Phillips who landed awkwardly in a challenge. We wish him well and a speedy recovery.
Alton return to league action at home, Tuesday evening (5th), when Camberley Town will be the visitors to the Exclusive Networks Stadium. 7.45pm kick-off.
