Match report by Dave Hawtin
The home side dominated this game from start to finish but as is often the case in a football match the performance of one of the goalkeepers can ensure supporters are on the edge of their seats as the final whistle approaches.
Alton created chances at regular intervals during the first half , MacAllister and Phillips had already gone close before Marshall’s header at the back post just 12 minutes in went closer still.
On 22 minutes the opening goal. MacAllister strode forward from just inside the attacking half leaving two defenders in his wake as he bore down on goal before nonchalantly passing the ball into the corner of the net.
If the home crowd had imagined the flood gates might open, the visiting keeper had other ideas, making three real quality saves from Tanner, Sanderson and MacAllister all of which looked goalbound.
Alton continued on the front foot at the start of the second half and just minutes in Phillips shot from the angle finally beat the keeper but this time the woodwork came to the rescue.
As the home side continued to push forward Spelthorne capatalised on an error and the striker was in on goal but fortunately he shot wide when well placed.
You could feel a little anxiety in the stadium as chances came and went for the home side, Marshall again thwarted by the woodwork, and on 82 minutes that fear was realised as a shot from the edge of the box bought the game level.
Alton didn’t panic and continued to move the ball around the park trying to create another chance and when it came it was worth waiting for.
On 88 minutes a free kick on the left just inside the attacking half was quickly moved between Benham, Phillips and MacAllister who found Mdlalose. He in turn slipped MacAllister through having continued his run who then delivered a peach of a cross that was met by the head of Jamie Hoppitt who thumped it home from 6 yards. A goal worthy of winning any match.
Spelthorne who needed a result to avoid relegation on the day worked hard throughout and played when they could but ultimately it was not to be their day.
Alton travel to Sandhurst Town this Saturday 29th. Kick off 3pm.
