Alton Walking Football Club has donated £850 raised at four special Christmas games to Prostate Cancer UK.

The club has 44 members ranging in age from 50 to 78 who meet twice a week to play on the all-weather pitch at Alton Football Club.

It offers companionship and a sense of purpose, providing older football enthusiasts the chance to continue playing in a safe and fun environment.

Mike Graves, the head of walking football, said: “The camaraderie and banter within the club are unmatched, and after each session players always leave with a smile on their face.”

The club raises money for charity every year and Mike revealed that 2024’s beneficiary was a cause close to the players’ hearts.

In his donation letter, he told the charity: “One of the reasons Prostate Cancer UK was chosen this year is that several of our members have been diagnosed with prostate cancer in the past.

“Thanks to your help and support, and the continued encouragement of the club, they have successfully overcome their battles with cancer and are still able to enjoy walking football.

“As a result we now actively encourage all members to take regular PSA tests, knowing that early detection significantly increases the chances of recovery.”

Mike said the Christmas games were played “with great enthusiasm and strong turnouts” and added that the club was “delighted” with how much it raised.

He told the charity: “I am continually inspired by the dedication of your team and the difference you make in the lives of patients and their families. We believe in your vision and the positive changes your charity continues to bring to communities everywhere.

“Once again, thank you for your unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those affected by prostate cancer. We look forward to seeing the continued success of your work.”
