Tooting & Mitcham 3 - 0 Alton

11 Nov 2024

Match report by Dave Hawtin

A game ultimately defined by two errors and a stunning volley from 20 yards.

The home side definitely had the majority of the possession in the first half but in open play the visitors created the best two chances.

Alton found themselves two goals down after just 20 minutes. The first was one of the errors and the second a stunning volley from the edge of the penalty area.

Alton should have got one back quickly after that second goal when Tom Hill found himself clear but was unable to find the target from a very good position.

On the lovely grass playing surface Alton continued to look to play good football and should have reduced the deceit right on half time having passed their way through the home side. Marinescu delayed his shot when clear and was sheperded wide of the goal away from danger.

During the second half the home side seemed comfortable in allowing the visitors possession and Alton continued to play some really attractive football but without creating a real goal scoring opportunity.

The game was finished as a contest when another unnecessary error was punished late in the game.

Due to injury and suspension the playing squad was tested in this fixture with players asked to play in unfamiliar roles. To a man they committed and worked hard. They need to trust and have faith in the process and the results will very likely improve them over the next couple of months.

Alton return home this Saturday 16th, when Sandhurst Town will be the visitors to The Exclusive Networks Stadium.
