Match report by Dave Hawtin
More frustration for the home side at the weekend, following a defeat to Jersey in the week when two late goals turned the game in the visitors' favour.
Alton suffered the same fate against another side with ambition to challenge for the title when an 83rd minute goal took all three points.
In a really entertaining game the home side will rue the fact that they created the very best chances but could not convert them.
Three one-on-one’s went begging and one baffling decision summed up their luck at the moment.
Louis Russell broke clear on goal again and was unceremoniously upended by a desperate last gasp challenge. Whilst the crowd were waiting for a decision that would penalise Whyteleafe the referee chose to book Russell for diving. It did not go down well with the home supporters.
The visitors are a powerful side who play good football and Alton coped comfortably with their threat throughout the game not allowing them a clear cut chance right up until a contested and harshly awarded free kick was headed home, finding its way agonisingly slowly into the far corner.
To a man the home side put in a shift, working hard, playing controlled football at every opportunity threatening with pace down both flanks.
Whilst the results are not reflecting the performances just at the moment the squad hopefully recognise that they are very competitive and with just a little luck and perseverance they will turn this around. That is the belief and opinion of the fan base who regularly attend the games.
Alton are at home again this coming Saturday when Knaphill will be the visitors to The Exclusive Networks Stadium in the Aldershot Senior Cup: Second Round. 3pm kick off.
