In an intense contest, the Alton Fireballs edged out the Down Grange Panthers 3-2, with Alton leading 2-1 at halftime.
The Fireballs initially found themselves behind after an unfortunate moment when the Alton goalkeeper failed to punch a cross away, allowing the ball to slip into the net. However, Alton soon equalized when Callum’s effort hit the post and Sebby reacted quickly, placing the rebound into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
Just before halftime, Lucas put the Fireballs ahead with a long-range strike that caught the Panthers’ keeper off guard, leaving him motionless as the ball flew past into the goal.
The second half saw more drama as Down Grange equalized in unusual circumstances. Following an injury stoppage, the ball was returned to Alton, but the Panthers pressed forward aggressively and took advantage of the situation to level the score at 2-2.
Alton responded with determination, and Ollie delivered the winning goal, placing a beautiful shot close to the left post to make it 3-2. The Panthers had a stroke of luck late in the game, clearing a goal-bound shot from their line and surviving further pressure as Max’s shot rattled the bar and two more efforts struck the post.
Despite these close calls, the Fireballs held on to their narrow lead, securing a well-earned 3-2 victory.
