Match report by Dave Hawtin
Alton exited the FA Vase at the first hurdle on Saturday down in Southampton against Millbrook.
The visitors started well and were causing lots of problems. Darnell Mcdonald was causing all sorts down the left flank, so much so that he was the victim of a crude lunging tackle that most agreed was deserving of a red card and not the yellow that the referee issued.
Soon after Alton missed a great opportunity to take the lead. A swift break down the left, a super ball across the penalty area and Owen Tanner who was arriving at speed unfortunately lifted the chance over the bar with the goalkeeper stranded.
That was about as good as it was going to get for the visitors for the rest of the game.
Millbrook took the lead when Alton didn’t react to a short corner. They were able to step inside and curl a shot into the far corner unopposed. A lead the home side held until half time with neither side creating anything of note.
Sanderson headed over from a reasonable position in an attempt to level the game, but as appears to be the current run of form, the home side immediately broke to the other end and extended the lead with little resistance and the defence splintered.
The second goal sealed the win for the home side and they were able to extended the lead late in the game, again capitalising on hesitation at the back to rub salt into the wounds.
Like most seasons there are normally challenging periods to negotiate, it is still very early in the season and the squad is coming together, stick together and for sure there will be better times ahead.
Alton return home on Tuesday night for the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup: 1st Round, when Camberley Town will be the visitors to the Exclusive Networks Stadium. 7.45pm kick off.
