Horley Town 2 - 1 Alton

16 Sep 2024

Match report by Dave Hawtin

A tight game on a challenging surface just went the way of the home side on Saturday.

Alton were quickest out of the blocks and looked the most likely during the opening spell of the game.

As the home side gained a foothold they shook the visitors in the 13th minute. A shot from the angle was pushed onto the post by Melville and the ball fell invitingly for an attacker to bundle home.

Alton were quickly back on terms. A slick move opened the home defence up and Jamie Hoppitt clear in on goal finished confidently.

Alton were now on top but were unable to press home the advantage and it was all level at the break.

In the first minute of the second half the woodwork came to the rescue of the home side. Jordan Addo's shot coming back of the bar and the ball was smuggled clear.

On 50 minutes Horley regained the lead. A challenge on the edge of the box fell nicely for the attacker and he shot home at the far post.

In the next 10 minutes Alton did well to stop the home side extending the lead, twice surviving goal mouth scrambles.

As the game entered the latter stages it was Alton in the ascendancy. Horley deployed gamesmanship tactics to slow the game down and frustrate the visitors who managed to create a couple of decent chances that were well defended.

The last chance of the game came eight minutes into injury time. Moyo's shot from 18 yards came back off the post and fell to Coles who quickly sorted his feet out and shot for goal only for the home keeper to somehow raise an arm and deflect it over the bar. It was that late that there was no time to take the corner.

Alton continue on the road this Saturday with a visit to Millbrook in the FA Vase. 3pm kick off.
