Match report by Dave Hawtin
A disappointing performance on Saturday afternoon for the home side.
The visitors took a two goal advantage into the break, scoring twice in a 5 minute spell midway through the half. A really great strike from 20 yards on 25 minutes and a scrappy goal on the half hour when a free kick was poorly defended and the ball spun agonisingly into the back of the net.
The home side huffed and puffed throughout the half but should have pulled back a goal right on half time. A ball from the left was met at the back post by Jamie Hoppitt who could only direct his close range header straight at the keeper.
Chances were few and far between in the second half and just as Alton started to build momentum and territory the advantage was lost when Coles was sin binned for 10 minutes.
To rub salt into the wounds the game was finished as a contest on 75 minutes when a harmless free kick from the left somehow found its way into the net at the near post past Douglas.
A 94th minute penalty converted by Coles was the best the home side managed from a bad day at the office.
Alton are back in Hampshire Cup action tomorrow night, at home, when Sholing will be the visitors to The Exclusive Networks Stadium. 7.45pm kick off.
