A real close call on Tuesday night at The Exclusive Networks Stadium. Darnell McDonald's super strike from 25 yards on 77 minutes was ultimately the difference between the two sides in this Hampshire Cup tie.
Manager Kev Adair took the opportunity to take a good look at his squad making nine changes from the starting eleven that he fielded on the previous Saturday in Jersey.
During an uneventful first half neither side created much. The one real opportunity fell to the hosts. A quick free quick caught the Andover side out and a shot from distance crashed against the bar and fell nicely for the striker at close range but under pressure the follow up was lifted over the gaping goal and we went into the break goalless.
The second half was a lot livelier and Andover definitely had the best of it. On the hour they themselves hit the bar and goalkeeper Theo Rust bravely saved the follow up.
With both sides chasing a winner, and fresh legs introduced, the game seemed to speed up. The MacDonald goal resulted in Andover driving forward in numbers and they were awarded a penalty on 80 minutes. The striker who took the kick tried to be too clever and in trying the legendary Panenka kick was embarrassed to see the keeper stand up and collect it effortlessly.
With time running out, Liam Marshall appeared to be fouled in the penalty area but the referee waved play on.
Alton were more than happy to take the win but the visitors will likely be disappointed that they did not get something from the game.
Alton are back in league action at home this Saturday (24th), when Sheerwater will be the visitors to The Exclusive Networks Stadium. 3pm kick off.
