Match report by Dave Hawtin
Alton were sent crashing out of the FA Vase on Saturday as Cowes performed a very late smash and grab on them with goals in the 85th minute and a penalty in the 93rd minute of the game.
The home side were dominant for most of the game against their opponents who were technically good but who didn't threaten until the later stages.
Having taken the lead after 15 minutes when Luke Perkins shot home with his left foot from 12 yards, Alton failed to capitalise on the many gilt edged chances they created that should have left them comfortably clear at the half time whistle.
The home side continued to dominate territory during the second half but the visitors defended resolutely and in doing so ensured that as the game entered the latter stages they grew in confidence and after a powerful shot came back off of the crossbar they reacted quickest to equalise to stun the home crowd.
As the game entered injury time they won themselves an unnecessary penalty which was cooly dispatched. No time left for the home side to recover.
A classic example of not taking those chances having bossed the game for the best part. It hurts when you are on the receiving end.
Alton return to Combined Counties league action, away at Guildford on Saturday.
