Match Report: Alton 3 - 1 Bashley

Posted: 03.10.21

Another entertaining game at rain drenched Anstey Park on Saturday afternoon against one of the front runners in the league.

An early error in the visitor's defence gave Jack Fowler the chance to shoot from long range and but for a deflection off a retreating defender the ball flew just wide with the keeper stranded.

It was obvious quite early on that the visitors were going to be comfortable on the ball and were drilled in keeping possession but the home side were very patient in keeping a good shape throughout the pitch.

A pattern emerged as Alton looked very dangerous as they picked off every loose ball that the visitors coughed up and in their frustration they were available at regular intervals.

Ed Dryden nicked a ball just in the home side's half and drove forward releasing Fowler who delayed his shot somewhat and the ball was cleared.

Alton now gained the initiative and opened the scoring on 16 minutes, George Bowerman isolated the full back at the far post and headed home Matt Graham’s perfect delivery from the left.

Now well on top the home side should have extended the lead, the visitors keeper saved in a one on one with Rob Carr, and from another exquisite delivery from Graham, Fowler clear at the back post guided his shot wide when he should have hit the target.

In a rare foray into the Alton half, Bashley were level on 29 minutes, and what a goal it was. Having won a dubious free kick 25 yards out the ball was drilled into the top right hand corner of the net, three keepers would not have stopped it.

Alton were still threatening regularly, but the visitors having ridden their luck grew in confidence and Kieron Greene had to be alert when the ball broke nicely for them in the box to block a shot wide for a corner just before half time.

The second half continued with the home side still on top and they re took the lead on 48 minutes. Bashley were unable to clear their lines and the resulting corner broke to Dryden who drove it home from 6 yards.

The game was now opening up and against the run of play the visitors might have found another equaliser. Greene blocked from close range and the resulting shot a from 25 yards cannoned off the bar and spun up into the air where the retreating defenders were able to clear.

Back came Alton and after a good passage of play on 58 minutes Jamie Phillips broke into the box, wrong footed a defender who panicked and clearly fouled him, the penalty was confidently dispatched by Dylan Riley.

Rob Carr strode forward and his goal bound strike from 20 Yards was deflected just wide as Alton tried to press home their advantage.

The midfield of Benham, Hunter and Black continued to impose themselves and the introduction of fresh legs in Knight and Caborn were still causing all sorts of problems down both flanks.

Bowerman could not convert from close range and the ball drifted over the bar having appeared to have flicked up off of his hand.

The last word nearly went to the visitors, a shot across Greene came back off the far post but the lurking striker could not gain possession of the bouncing ball quickly enough and Greene and Riley were able to block his close range effort.

Another strong disciplined and confident display from the home side, a great game to watch in difficult conditions.
