Alton 2 - 2 Pagham (3-5 Pens)

Posted: 27.09.21

Alton bowed out of the Vase on Saturday afternoon after a frantic and exciting last 20 minutes took the game to penalties, in what was a competitive game played in a good spirit at the Anstey Park Enclosure.

Alton started well and Rob Carr charged down a clearance and quickly got off a shot that the visitors keeper could only parry back into play. Andy Coulson reacted quickest to the rebound but lifted his shot over the bar from 10 yards.

Pagham reacted with their own shot from range but Kieron Greene comfortably gathered the ball in.

Trevor Caborn and Rob Carr were proving a handful down both flanks and the visitors left full back was booked on 25 minutes for persistently infringing in trying to contain Caborn.

The visitors keeper then spilled another Carr shot on goal but recovered well to gather the rebound before the home side could react.

The opening goal came on 30 minutes, Pagham broke down the right and having found himself without too much support the striker unleashed a powerful shot from an acute angle which flew into the far corner of the net, much to the surprise of everyone in the ground.

This emboldened the visitors and just before the break they might have increased their lead as a striker broke clear and as Greene advanced toward him he could only poke the ball wide of goal.

Still time for the home side to create another good chance, again Carr broke clear behind the defence and squared his cross back to Coulson but a timely and perfectly calculated slide tackle 6 yards from goal managed to block the ball wide.

Alton started the second half brightly and were denied an equaliser when Caborn raced clear on the left and the keeper did well to push his stinging shot onto the post and away for a corner.

Alton were maintaining good possession but as they pressed forward they were caught on the break on 65 minutes as the visitors clinically converted at the back post to extend their lead.

No choice now for the home side other than to bring on fresh legs to try to force a reaction, and a reaction they got.

Oli Page, George Bowerman and Jack Fowler were able to get at the now retreating and tiring visitors, Bowerman fired over twice in quick succession as chances began to come at will.

The touch paper was lit on 80 minutes when Page slipped Fowler in on goal and he finished with aplomb past the onrushing keeper.

The home side's supporters held their breath when the visitors in a very rare attack in the later stages of the game broke clear and Greene kept his side in the game with a really good block.

Back came the home side as the game approached the the 90th minute, from a good passage of play down the right hand side, Fowler delivered a super cross into the penalty area and Oli Page thumped a header home from 6 yards.

No extra time, straight to penalties. Still lots of thrills as the officials chose to apply the 'keeper's cannot step off their line' rule on two occasions but eventually the visitors converted all of their spot kicks to advance to the next stage of the competition.
