Match Report: Fareham Town 3 - 2 Alton

Posted: 22.09.21

Injuries and Added Time Drama as Alton Exit the Hampshire Senior Cup.

A first minute Andy Coulson goal set up an exciting encounter, with Dylan Riley putting the Brewers in the lead again with a second half penalty, but it was Fareham that progressed after an injury time own goal.

Kev Adair made some changes to the starting line-up that won at Fareham three days ago, with starts for Trevor Caborn, Oli Page, Ben May and a debut for Martin Brian.

Alton scored in the opening moments when a free kick by Trevor Caborn sent into the box found Andy Coluson with an excellent first time, right foot finish.

Fareham reacted with plenty of possession and chances, shots were blocked and the ball even rebounded twice off the cross bar to deny them from a corner.

After 10 mins Liam Flanigan got injured with what looked like a calf strain, and had to be replaced by Ed Dryden on 15 mins.

Alton did have some good play though, particularly from Richie Hunter who showed excellent composure and skills after winning the ball back while playing in a right back position; this combined well with the explosive pace of Trever Caborn down the right hand side.

Similar story to Saturdays game, it was set pieces where Fareham created their best opportunities and it was another corner won by Fareham’s number 5 that was initially saved by Kieron Greene that ended up being put away by well by Fareham’s 10.

(Fareham goal 20mins 1-1.)

Alton made it tough going by giving the ball away easily at times, however Andy Coulson looked through on goal on 30mins but for a very good tackle and both Oli Page and Trevor Caborn both had shots.

HT 1-1

The second half we saw some great chances fall to Andy Coulson running onto through balls from midfield, three chance were created in the space of ten minutes but all were well saved by Fareham’s Goalkeeper.

It was during this good spell of attacking play when Trevor Caborn was able to beat the offside and was brought down by the keeper on 65 mins and a penalty awarded.

Birthday boy, Dylan Riley stepped up and smashed the ball into the net.

After Alton’s second goal Fareham’s head went down for a bit, and substitutions were made. Matt Benham on for Martin Brian and what looked like another injury, Matt Graham came on for Trevor Caborn.

A big turning point in the game. On 81 mins the referee originally awarded a free kick to Fareham outside the penalty area, following strong protests and intervention from the linesman changed the freekick to a penalty. Fareham equalised.

The game would have gone to penalties at 2-2 but in the fourth or fifth minute of injury time, Alton appealed for a hand ball well into the Fareham’s half, then a long ball sent forward by the Fareham Goalie, unfortunately ended with an own goal from Ben May under pressure in an aerial dual.

It was a good game that showed the importance of having a large squad you can rely on.

With the FA Vase on Sat, let’s hope that Rosie can work her magic!

FT 3-2 loss.
