Posted: 01.09.21

Alton eased through to the next round of the Hampshire Senior Cup but not without the visitors from the league below putting up a really good battle.

Totton started really confidently and moved the ball well between each other using the full width of the pitched to stretch Alton.

Much against the run of play the home side took the lead in the 10th minute. Chris Horton's cross shot from the right and nestled into the far corner of the net.

Within 2 minutes the visitors were level from the penalty spot after a challenge in the box when a striker was well placed was rightly judged a foul.

Alton were physically the stronger side but were struggling to string good possession together and Totton remained a threat on the break for the rest of the half but young Roux Hardcastle in the home goal and the visitors keeper were confident in their handling and distribution.

In the second half Alton asserted a bit more authority on the game and had gained more possession without really creating a clear cut chance.

As the half went into the last quarter on they made 3 changes that introduced a lot of pace to the attack. Luke Perkins, Liam Knight and Trevor Caborn joining the effort to finish the game before it went to penalties.

These changes made an immediate impact and the chances started coming at regular intervals as all three individuals went close to the second goal having run the tiring defenders causing chaos in the visitors defence.

The winning goal came after 85 minutes, youngster Trevor Caborn ran onto another defence splitting pass and cut the ball back nicely to Liam Knight who drove the ball into the net from 12 yards.

The visitors belied their current form and were a determined opponent. They also took every opportunity to play good football and the sizeable crowd were entertained well.
