Match Report: Hamworthy Utd 3 - 0 Alton

Posted: 30.08.21

Alton suffered their first defeat of the season away at Hamworthy in Poole on Saturday.

In some ways the visitors were flattered by the score line as during the first half the home side were very dominant and only the efforts of Woodcock in the Alton goal and some wasteful finishing kept the score line respectful.

That said the timings of the goals in the first half hurt most as Alton worked hard to stay in contention. Having ridden their luck during the opening period the score line remained goal less until the 27th minute when finally the home side broke through.

Still Alton worked hard to contain their rampant hosts and having got to the 45th minute of the game took an odd twist. Matt Benham delivered a free kick into the Hamwothy box where a home defender in attempting to clear, clearly handballed the cross and whilst the visitors claimed the penalty the home side broke the whole length of the pitch and the stretched home defence failed to clear and found themselves 2 nil down at the break.

Incredibly frustrating in the circumstances but Hamworthy were well worth there lead.

In the second half there is no doubt Alton had their fair share of possession but only created one worthwhile chance when Liam Knight stepped inside his defender and shot across the face of the goal when well placed.

At times it felt that the home side were playing within themselves but credit must be given to Alton as they competed way better than they had in the first half.

The third goal was scored in the 90th minute when the ball broke to a suspiciously looking offside home striker 6 yards out who had a simple finish.

Anyone who finishes higher than Hamworthy are likely to be challenging for the title as without doubt they are one of the better sides in the league.

Alton will hopefully learn from this defeat and understand the task and challenge ahead of them this season.
