Match Report: Bradford Town 1 - 1 Alton

Posted: 23.08.21

This was another impressive result for Kev Adair and his squad against a powerful side down near Bath on Saturday afternoon.

The game was played in warm sunshine which belied the awful conditions that the coach full of players and supporters had travelled down in.

The home side dominated most of the possession during the first half but the away side kept them at arm's length for the most part and looked threatening on the break.

The first real chance of the game came from Alton, Oli Page's left wing delivery just evaded the unmarked Bowerman at the back Post.

On 20 minutes the home side took the lead with a really good strike from 20 yards into the far left corner past the despairing dive of Woodcock in the Alton goal, whilst it was a great finish the Alton defence will be disappointed that they did not shut down the shot given that they had good numbers goals side at the time.

Alton did not panic and worked hard to stay in the game, twice they got in behind the home defence. On the first occasion, the home keeper did really well as he came off of his line and smothered at the feet of Bowerman.

Another chance came as Carr burst through on the right and slid is shot just wide, again the keeper did well to shut down the angle.

The last action of the half came when Woodcock in the Alton goal blocked a close range effort and in the goalmouth scramble Dylan Riley was on the spot to clear the threat.

The game continued to be played at a good pace and possibly changed on an outstanding save from Woodcock in the Alton goal who got a strong left hand to a powerful header that looked goal bound.

This seemed to inspire Alton and they grabbed the initiative and equalised on the hour, Matt Benham who came on for his first minutes of the new season shot from 20 yards and the home keeper could only parry the ball back into the danger area where Rob Carr reacted quickest to slot home the equaliser.

This appeared to rattle the home side and was compounded when their left back accumulated 2 bookings within 5 minutes of each other leaving them with 10 men for the last 20 minutes.

Steve Black found himself clean through on goal for the visitors but again the home keeper blocked the shot. Fowler shot well wide from 20 yards as the game edged toward the end leaving both sides supporters on the edge of their seats.

The home side still looked to get forward as often as they could and net that elusive winner and remained a threat throughout.

As the game went into injury time there was still one more twist. Chris Horton who had only just replaced Jack Fowler for Alton met a corner at point blank range with a header but somehow the keeper pushed the ball over the top.

That was the last incident as the referee blew the final whistle. Back to the Enclosure for the replay on Tuesday.
