Match Report: Alresford 0 - 1 Alton

Posted: 17.08.21

Alton continued their impressive start to the new season with a hardworking 1 nil away at Alton on Tuesday night.

The visitors squad strength is currently being tested as they made numerous changes from the previous game but continued to be ultra-competitive.

The visitors started the game really well and moved the ball quickly on the slick playing surface. Ritchie Hunter and Stuart Green quickly gained the upper hand in the middle of the park and their constant movement and probing meant that Alton were seeing a lot of possession during the first half.

George Bowerman up front was outstanding in his protection of the ball and work rate and Chris Horton very nearly benefitted when his shot from 20 yards tested the home keeper.

The home side were a threat down both flanks with their pace and the Alton defence had to be constantly alert during a period when a few crosses came in at pace, Dylan Riley made a very important clearance at the back post when Alresford engineered an overload of players against him.

The game turned in the 35th minute when a home striker was sent off after an incident with Alton full back Jamie Phillips. The referee had no hesitation in showing him an immediate Red card.

Alton continued to boss possession but neither keeper was seriously tested and the half remained goalless.

Any expectation that the extra player would make the difference were quickly quashed as the home team came out on the front foot. They made it quite clear that they were not prepared to just sit back and accept their lack of numbers and broke forward quickly on numerous occasions.

The game opened up as it went into the last quarter and both managers introduced fresh legs to the game. One of those introduced for Alton Jack Fowler found himself in on goal and he charged into the box he was thwarted by an excellent challenge that was perfectly timed to nick the ball away for a corner.

The winning goal was scored in the 75th minute, Dylan Riley broke up an attack and strode forward into the Alresford half, he slipped the ball to Fowler on the right and he drove forward and found Bowerman who let the ball run across his body into the path of young Andy Coulson on the edge of the box who swept a first time shot into the net. This young man is creating a reputation for important goals having come on in the first game of the season and scoring.

In the last 10 minutes Alresford continued to pour forward and created two glorious opportunities, on both occasions Keiron Greene in the Alton goal made himself big forcing the striker to prod the first chance wide and blocking the second chance with his body.

A really competitive game and another organised and disciplined performance by Alton.
