Match Report & Photos: Alton 1 - 0 Christchurch

Posted: 14.08.21

A hard fought win for Alton on a hot Saturday afternoon at The Enclosure.

Clear chances on the day were few and far between as the majority of the game was played between the two penalty areas with both sets of defenders very solid

Christchuch were the first to threaten and might have done better if the ball had been slightly lower, the opportunity eventually drifted well wide.

Midway through the half Alton threatened twice down the right flank, Rob Carr and Ritchie Hunter combined and the away keeper gathered well at the near post.

When Carr drilled a free kick into the far post the ball played pinball and a desperate last touch from a defender cleared the ball away. The half remained goalless.

At half time Alton had to reorganise as they lost Ed Dryden to a knock just before the break. George Bowerman came on up front and Steve Black dropped back into midfield.

Both sides were working hard to find a gap in either defence, who continued to stand firm.

Liam Knight is a constant threat and his battle with the Christchurch right full back was good to watch, when he did loose him the central defenders did well to clear his crosses.

The appearance of the Red Arrows overhead twice in quick succesion seemed to lift the energy of the players and the two major incidents in the game took place in the last 20 minutes.

A high bouncing ball into the Alton penalty area always favoured the home keeper, but a Christchuch striker collided with him with his feet very high. Both players were hurt in the collision with the striker coming of worse and eventually having to seek hospital treatment for a leg injury. Whilst hoping he is not badly injured he was very fortunate to only receive a yellow card, as the general concensus assumed it would definitely be red.

Woodcock in the home goal braveley battled on until the end of the game and his reward was his sides the winning goal on 85 minutes. Hesitation and a moments lapse in concentration by the last defender was pounced on by the ever alert Rob Carr who nicked the ball away from him and strode toward goal. Still with a lot to do he sweetly stroked the ball into the far corner to the delight of his colleagues and the home crowd.

Alton confidently saw out the extended injury time without incident and recorded a fine win against one of the most consistent sides in the Wessex Premier league.
