Clanfield 3 - 2 Alton Res.

Posted: 14.12.20

Firstly many thanks to the few supporters who attended Peel Park yesterday and secondly I apologise for what they had to endure.

On paper this should have been an ideal opportunity for Alton to put last week’s below standard performance behind them. This ultimately proved not to be.

Alton started well enough and pretty much controlled the opening stages without creating too much. Then 2 goals in quick succession from Kieran Lenachan and Callum Burch allowed the Reserves (rather fortuitously) lead 2-0 at Half time.

Half time words which included “stay tight and keep a clean sheet” obviously ignored, Clanfield capitalised on (what was to be the first of many) defensive frailties and pulled a goal back within minutes of the restart. The equaliser came with cheap giving away of possession, missed tackles and a lob which seemed to take and age to roll towards the goal. Inexplicable, indecision by the covering defender allowed the ball to cross the line for one of the softest goals you will ever see.

The winning goal for Clanfield came with 20 to go and (yet again indecision, weak tackling and poor decision making from us) but despite one chance hitting the upright towards the end Alton ended the game with what they deserved.

Clanfield fought throughout and thoroughly deserved the 3 points. For me, they optimised a team who work hard for each other, they never shied a challenge. Even at 2 down they believed in their manager, the system and ultimately the player next to them.

We should learn a thing or two from that.
