Alton 2 - 0 Hythe & Dibden

Posted: 31.10.20

Alton continued their impressive start to the season with another win at home in another incident packed game at The Enclosure.

Alton 2 - 0 Hythe & Dibden

Hythe started quickly and were the dominating side in the early stages of the game, twice they had good opportunities to test Greene in the home goal but narrowly missed the target on both occasions.

On 15 minutes the game was halted as the referee pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. After a 5 minute delay the senior linesman took the middle and a ‘willing volunteer’ from the crowd ran the line to ensure the game could continue.

The two evenly matched sides continued to trade attacks but neither created a real scoring opportunity.

40 minutes in and a game changing incident, Scott Sanderson latched onto a very poor back pass and ran clear at goal, the onrushing keeper unceremoniously upended him just outside the box. The outcome was inevitable, a red card for the away keeper and another slight delay as Hythe reorganised themselves.

Things got a little tougher for the away side right on half time, full back Jamie Phillips dissected the mass rank of defenders with a superb throughball, Jack Fowler perfectly timed his run from left to right and clipped an excellent finish past the substitute keeper to the delight of the home crowd.

The second half was a good contest, Hythe are a good side and the break at half time had allowed them to reorganise themselves and they came out with a plan.

Alton pressed early but Hythe defended well and when they broke they constantly looked a threat.

15 minutes into the half and it was 10 v 10, Scott Sanderson was dismissed for a reckless challenge that gave the referee no real choice. Had Alton’s advantage gone?

They game became nip and tuck, but as it went on Alton looked the more likely as they pressed home a territorial advantage.

After 73 minutes George Bowerman replaced Luke Perkins whose driving runs were causing problems out on the right hand side in the second half but he succumbed to a thigh strain.

On 77 minutes the 2nd and decisive goal came for the home side, chaos in the away penalty area, a huge shout for handball went unpunished but Hythe were unable to clear properly. The ball was delivered back into the area from the right and Bowerman with little time to react redirected the pacey cross back across the keeper into the right hand corner of the net. It really was a very clever finish.

Game over and another 3 points against a side who will be there or there about at the season end.
