Alton 1 - 0 Romsey Town

Posted: 24.10.20

The score line did not reflect the balance of this game as Romsey battled well to stay in it whilst never threatening the home keeper.

Alton 1 - 0 Romsey Town

A swirling wind and squalls of rain made it awkward for both sides but Alton dominated both possession and territory throughout the 90 minutes.

The game burst into life after 18 minutes when Liam Knight broke down the left flank and was caught by a reckless late challenge by one of the giant Romsey centre backs. Knight was unable to continue and the referee under pressure from an incensed crowd only issued a yellow card when most were expecting Red. In the same incident home player Jack Fowler was sin binned for 10 minutes for questioning the decision.

Down to 10 men the home side dug in and rode the period out and continued to ask questions when back up to full strength without creating a real clear cut chance themselves.

After 40 minutes Alton got the breakthrough, Scott Sanderson was hauled back out wide on the right by the other centre half who was duly booked. Matt Graham’s dead ball delivery can usually be the relied on to cause problems and right on cue this one was right on the money, right into the danger zone where defenders and keepers dare to go. No need for an attacker to do anything other than threaten a challenge as the ball flew into the left hand corner of the net.

A one nil lead at half time and it hadn’t gone unnoticed in the home crowd that both of the centre half’s were on a booking!!

The second half continued as the first ended Alton on top and a real threat as they looked to open up the away defence. On the hour Jack Fowler caused havoc centrally with his quick feet, leaving a couple of defenders in his wake as he burst through he was unceremoniously dumped onto the artificial turf by the last man. Obvious yellow card and it being his second Romsey we’re down to 10 men for the last 30 minutes as their number 6 left the field of play.

Chances were now coming more frequently, Fowler should have scored with a free header from 8 yards but somehow the keeper scrambled it onto the post and away for a corner.

Then a really clever one-two with Sanderson again got Fowler in on goal but his scuffed shot was turned away for another corner.

Were the home side going to rue these missed chances? Romsey remained organised but other than a very clever opportunistic shot from 40 yards out by their number 9 Greene in the home goal had a very uneventful game.

Alton wound the clock down in the last 5 minutes with intelligent possession of the ball in the attacking corners, no need for a second goal today.

Enjoyable afternoon for the sizeable home contingent of fans as they ran the gambit of emotions that local football brings you. Blustery wind and rain, floodlights aluminating the darkening sky and 3 points banked.
