Alton Res. 1 - 1 (4 - 1 Pens) AFC Portchester U23

In a similar fixture last season Alton won on penalties and another close game was expected. AFC Portchester were always going to be a tough prospect and this proved to be the case, with them playing the better football but coming up against a resolute and organised Alton defence.

With half time approaching and few chances both ways, Jacob Channon (having not long been released from the Sin Bin) went on an unchallenged run from defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot from distance, the swerve and pace of which left the Portchester keeper no chance, to give The Brewers a 1-0 lead to go into the second half.

The second half started and pretty much continued as the first. Portchester with arguably more possession, Alton with the better chances. Both Keepers called into action and producing excellent saves.

As per the first half, but this time due to straight red for Nial Day in the 61st minute, Alton were reduced to 10. Harsh decision? ( I’ll leave that to those that were there...). This put Alton on the back foot but the players adapted, stood strong and still created chances.

The Portchester equaliser came from a quickly taken free kick seemingly catching the Alton defence off guard and a smart run and finish by Shepherd Harrison Todd in the 70 minute drew the visitors level.

Further chances came and went and the score was 1-1 at FT

Straight to Penalties.

Callum Burch taking and scoring the first for Alton.
A magnificent save by Elliot Knight gave Alton the advantage.
Next up Ali Gill for Alton and the Portchester Penalty we’re both converted.
Max Williams converted and another marvellous save by Elliot left Jacob Channon to step up to potentially seal the win. This he did with confidence and the celebrations began.

Penalties 4-1.

Both teams contributed to a strangely entertaining game, sometimes for the wrong reasons, and Alton progress to the next round of the John Stimpson Memorial Shield where they will face either Folland Sports or Liss Athletic, date TBC
