Ash United 1 - 3 Alton
Posted: 11.03.20Aldershot Senior Cup Quarter Final
Alton progressed to the semi final of the Aldershot Senior Cup on Tuesday, courtesy of two own goals and a Liam Knight goal in the dying minutes.
With Ash's pitch deemed unplayable from the recent poor weather and forecast rain, the match was switched to The Enclosure. Those in attendance were still finding their palaces as Alton took the lead, from the kick off the ball was played out to Alton's left were Liam Knight got to the bye line and his cross was turned into his own net by Jordan Devanney via his knee.
With the wind and rain not doing either sides any favours chances were few and far between, but after Lally missed a great chance to equalise it was Alton who created the better chances.
Stuart Green had a header parried by the Ash keeper, with no one on hand to slot the rebound home.
Bowerman shot wide, Sanderson somehow shot over when well placed and McMullen saved well when Knight got through on goal.
Alton increased their lead at the start of the second half and again the goal came courtesy of another own goal.
Ash played a through ball towards the Alton goal, Justin Courtnage was alert to leave his area to clear the ball forward.
With the ball seemingly bouncing through to the Ash keeper, there was a miscommunication and Wyatt in trying to help the ball back headed the ball wide of his keeper and into the unguarded goal.
Again as with the first half Alton created the better chances of the few that were created. Sanderson got goal side of his defender but screwed his shot wide, before with ten minutes left, and rater against the run of play Ash pulled a goal back as Bale got in front of a defender to head passed Courtnage.
Sensing an unlikely equaliser that would have taken the game to extra time Ash, pushed forward. They nearly got caught out as sub Matt Connor, was played in behind his defender, he raced into the area and he shot across the keeper, but the referee ruled the goal out for a hand ball earlier in the move.
Alton were not to be denied though and the very next move again Connor got behind hos defender, but this time squared the ball for Knight to slide home to secure the victory and send most of the wet and cold fans home happy.
